Rug repair course One of our Rug Repair trainees in Gold Coast, Australia

I’m really excited to see some of you at our upcoming Rug Repair courses!

I grew up watching my paternal grandmother weaving rugs – she used to process all her wool in-house by hand, from carding to spinning, dyeing, knitting itchy jumpers and weaving gorgeous wall coverings – well...rugs, but they were too precious to be put on the floor so most were used as wall coverings (crudely nailed to the walls in a fashion which would make most rug enthusiasts gasp in horror).

I’ve always had an interest in rugs (no wonder given my upbringing!) and have done rug repairs for as long as I remember. Likely bad ones to begin with, I’m not ashamed to admit!

Several years ago I had the chance to travel to the Middle East to polish my rug repair skills and I grabbed it with my both hands. I’ve spent several weeks in Ankara learning and practising with an Iranian (Persian) master rug weaver and repairer.

It must have been an amusing sight for the local Turkish rug dealers in Samapazari (The Hay Market) who were kind enough to host us (and who occasionally pitched in to show me their way of re-knotting – quite confusing considering they have a completely reversed technique pushing the yarn around the warps with a needle, as opposed to the Persian weaving way of pulling the yarn with a weaving hook).

Here are some photos of one of the rugs I still remember working on: an antique Persian Senneh (with its characteristic eccentric weft).

While the eccentric weft is very difficult to replicate, I’m particularly fond of these killims, especially as I later learnt that the same technique was used in some of the best Oltenian rugs (Oltenia being my paternal grandparents region. My maternal grandparents are from Transylvania. No, I'm not a vampire!).

Given the geographical distance between Oltenia and Kurdistan, Western Iran where this technique originated, this is a wonder that still boggles my mind.

Don’t be alarmed, we won’t tackle the eccentric weft on the course! At least not in the Essential Rug Repair one!

While for me rug repairs are a way of going back to my roots, they are also a great money maker! If you clean rugs and don’t know how to fix frail fringes, worn-out side-cords or repair splits and tears, you are leaving money on the table!

The upcoming Essential Rug Repair courses tackle these problems and are a great add-on to any carpet and rug cleaning business.

I look forward to seeing you mid August in Gold Coast, Australia and early November in Kidderminster, UK.

What about the eccentric weft I hear you ask? This will be covered along with other methods of reweaving in the Advanced Rug Restoration course at the beginning of March 2025.
