How to choose the right carpet and rug cleaning company
Unfortunately, the UK carpet and oriental rug cleaning industry is not regulated, which means there is no minimum requirement to become a carpet or area rug cleaner. Anybody can buy a cheap domestic carpet cleaner and start offering carpet or rug cleaning services.
A quick search on Yell shows there are 397 Yell registered companies offering carpet and rug cleaning services in Hampshire! Yes, 397 only on yell...who knows how many more not listed on Yell.
Or, for example, 240 carpet and rug cleaners in Berkshire, 131 carpet and rug cleaners in Wiltshire, 147 rug cleaners in Southampton, 110 carpet and rug cleaning companies in Winchester, 59 carpet and rug cleaners in Alresford, 80 rug cleaners in Andover, 40 rug cleaners covering Stockbridge, 36 carpet and rug cleaners in Salisbury, 28 rug cleaners in Newbury and 14 rug cleaners covering Alresford.
Things get even more complicated if you are looking for a specialist Persian and Oriental rug cleaner. Most carpet cleaners offer area rug cleaning services as well but the only recommended process for cleaning fine handmade rugs is the full immersion cleaning process which requires a dedicated workshop with specialist drying equipment, or what we call a rug spa. Less than 1% of carpet cleaners have the knowledge, equipment and the premises needed for full immersion rug cleaning.
So, how does one choose? How does one know who is a professional in an unregulated industry?
The National Carpet Cleaners Association has actively sought the introduction of minimum standards in carpet and Oriental rug cleaning since 1968 and is the only independent UK trade body recognized by the Government as an authority in our industry.
