Sisal Carpets | Stain Removal and Colour Repair

Sisal, Seagrass and Jute Carpets are difficult to clean and maintain. If you are reading this page you have probably already been told that sisal carpets cannot be cleaned and the stains are permanent!

Brio Carpet Care is proud to have developed an unique system which allows us to improve stains on sisal carpets and dye colour loss areas to blend in with the rest of the carpet.

We are one of the leading fibre care companies in the UK, offering antique and contemporary rug cleaning and restoration services, and fine carpet care and colour repair which now also covers sisal, seagrass and jute carpets and rugs.

A family-run local company, Brio Carpet Care is an Advanced Member of the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA), WoolSafe Approved, US Textile Pro Certified, CleanSeal Approved, and Government Endorsed (TrustMark).

Here is a quick video of our unique colour repair process on sisal carpets.

See how we airbrush the colour back on this stain to blend it in:

Sisal Colour Loss

Sisal, seagrass and jute lose colour with the slightest amount of moisture and agitation. This leaves a distinctive light coloured patch.

Unlike wool and nylon, sisal fibres do not have dye pockets so they cannot technically be dyed, or at least not with the industry standard acidic dyes used for carpets and rugs.

Brio Carpet Care is the leading UK carpet dyeing company and has developed the Brio Dyes which also work on sisal, so we can now add the colour back (dye sisal) to blend in with the rest of the carpet.

Sisal Stain Removal

Sisal, seagrass and jute fibres are highly absorbent so any kind of spillage will likely cause a permanent stain. These type of stains need wet cleaning, but at the same time one should not wet clean sisal. This is the dilemma a carpet cleaner is facing when dealing with stains on sisal carpets. Most cleaners prefer to avoid them.

So what happens if one does wet clean sisal?

Wet cleaning the entire carpet will shrink it. Wet cleaning just a one spot or stain will however not lead to shrinkage!

So we can use controlled low moisture for stain removal with the only downside that the area will lose colour. So we can remove the stain, but the process will also remove the carpet colour as a result.

This is where our experience as a carpet dyer comes into play, as we can add the colour back / dye the now lighter "bleached" area to blend in with the rest of the carpet

It is a time consuming process and depending on the stains the results might not be perfect but in most cases it's a great improvement.

Sisal Carpet cleaning

Sisal carpets cannot be wet cleaned in the same way as wool caprets. The reasons behind this are:

  • Sisal carpets can shrink when wetted
  • Being cellulosic fibres, sisal carpets can brown when wet
  • Sisal is highly absorbent and takes a long time to dry
  • Sisal loses colour with moisture and agitation

This doesn't mean that sisal carpets and rugs cannot be cleaned, they just shouldn't be wet cleaned.  They can however be dry cleaned with a dry cleaning compound. Despite its name, the dry cleaning compound consist of micro sponges dampened with a cleaning solution. The micro sponges get agitated on the carpet surface with a counter rotating brush and absorb the dirt as they dry. The cleaning solution is also solvent based so it has reduced drying times.

Having said that, we regularly wash sisal, seagrass and jute rugs in our dedicated rug cleaning workshop with the help of specialist equipment to extract water and dry them in an optimum time frame.
